About Windermere Village

The civil parish currently has a population of around 8359 occupants. The town is located around half a mile away from Lake Windermere. Although the town does not directly link to the lake, it does owe the majority of its tourism and popularity to it.

The town of Windermere was originally known as Birthwaite, however, this later changed in 1847 when Windermere became established through its railway station.

The Terrace, which refers to the unique row of Grade 2 listed cottages designed by Augusts Pugin in 1849, is believed to have originally been built for railway executives from Windermere Station. It is thought the homes were originally built for railway executives in the 1800s and that is why the hierarchy of the houses exists.

Winderemere is the largest natural lake in England. The lake was created by a couple of huge glaciers 12,000 years ago. Windermere village does not directly touch the lake, however, we know how special Windermere is, so with almost every one of our tours, you’ll have the chance to visit this wonderful lake and learn about this historic icon.
