Overlooking the Esk river, Muncaster Castle is a privately owned property just a mile east of Ravenglass town. Recorded as a Grade 1 listed building, the historically haunted castle is still a lived-in family home 9 centuries on. The land has been owned by the Pennington family for more than 800 years. Paranormal researchers often visit the castle seeking rational explanations for documented strange encounters. Haunted experiences are also available at the castle throughout the year.
Originally built on Roman foundations, the 13th-century Pele tower is unique to the English-Scottish border. Muncaster Castle was renovated into a stately home in the 19th century. Narrated by the property owner Patrick Gordon-Duff-Pennington, an audio tour of the great hall, drawing room and library are available when visiting the castle. Brass railings, various portraits, and authentic Elizabethan furniture bring this historic castle to life.
The Muncaster Gardens
Spring and early summer see the Muncaster gardens come to life. Blossoming of rhododendrons, camellias and azaleas fill the 77 acres of land with vibrant colour. The gardens are home to many rare trees and plants.
Georgian Terrace
The half-mile long Georgian Terrace offers a breathtaking view of the Lakeland Fells. First laid out by Lord Muncaster in 1780, it is the earliest surviving manmade feature of the gardens. Leading off the terrace, you will find stunning maples, camellia and bamboo plants in the Japanese Garden.
Rhododendrons
Thought to be the best of their kind, the Muncaster Gardens are home to the largest collection of Rhododendrons in the north. The planting scheme mimics the environment in the Himalayas.

The enchanting walk through the ancient woodlands is a highlight of springtime. The uplifting vibrancy of the blue flowers has inspired many writers and poets.
Hawk & Owl Centre
Located next to the old rose garden, the hawk and owl centre is home to a range of different sized birds. Owls, falcons, eagles and vultures are all present throughout the centre allowing you to get close up and personal. Flying displays and heron feeds are run throughout the day, allowing you to see birds of prey soar in the valley.
