Explore Hill Top

Hill Top is often referred to as a time capsule of Beatrix Potter's life. Inside the 17th century farmhouse it appears as if Beatrix has just stepped outside and gone for a walk. Each room is full of her favourite things and you will see there are many references to her famous stories as you walk around her home. It's a fantastic place to explore as you take in the scenery that inspired Miss Potter.

The gardens surrounding the house are also spectacular, as you take a stroll up the garden path you can imagine a cheeky Peter Rabbit playing inbetween the flowers, herbs, fruit and vegetable garden.

How do i get to Hill Top and do i need to book?

Hill Top is located in Near Sawrey and isn't the easy place to access by public transport, however here at Mountain Goat we offer a number of services to get you to it - so don't worry! From our scheduled Beatrix Potter's Favourite Countryside day tour from Windermere, Bowness and Ambleside we make a stop at Hill Top and you have time to enter the house should you wish at an additional cost, alternatively you can use the time to explore the gardens and the shop.

We also have a public 525 bus service that runs alongside Windermere Lake Cruises ferry times. Our 525 service starts at Ferry House, where we run a shuttle bus up to Hill Top and into Hawkshead. Tickets can be purchased from the Windermere Information Centre or from the driver on the day.

It is also worth reminding that Hill Top is a small house and a timed-ticket system is in operation to avoid overcrowding and to protect the interior. Hill Top can be very busy and visitors may sometimes have to wait to enter the house.
