The Rail & Road tour from Edinburgh

To begin your Lake District break you will join our Rail & Road tour from Edinburgh Waverley.

The rail journey is an unguided part of the tour, where you will take the train through the beautiful county of Lancashire towards to the Lake District to join Mountain Goat's Beatrix Potter's Favourite Countryside tour in Windermere.

Your train ticket is included in this short break package and your driver guide for the day will be waiting to greet you at Oxenholme Railway Station before you head out into the Lake District national park to visit some hidden beauty spots and explore the stunning landscapes which inspired the famous author, Beatrix Potter, and other Lake District based writers.

The High Adventure

The tour is a chance to see the real Lake District.

Follow a route originally pioneered by the Romans and travel over the Lake District’s famous mountain passes; Hardknott and Wrynose, which are some of the steepest in Great Britain.

During your day you will have time to enjoy a narrow gauge heritage train ride, see England’s deepest lake and visit the grounds of the 14th Century Muncaster Castle.

The Ten Lakes Spectacular tour

On your second day you will join Mountain Goat's most popular full day Lake District excursion, the Ten Lakes Spectacular, where you will explore a large swathe of the national park, stopping in some of the most beautiful locations in England.

As the name suggests you will see 10 of the Lake District's glistening lakes as you learn about the area's history, heritage and local legends from your knowledgeable, local driver guide.

On this tour you will see some spectacular scenery from viewpoints well known for their stunning vistas, along with visiting historical landmarks and quaint Lakeland villages.

To being your Lake District short break you will take the train from Edinburgh through the stunning lowlands of Scotland before arriving in the mountainous national park, the Lake District.

You will disembark your train at Oxenholme, where you will be greeted by a Mountain Goat representative who will introduce you to the area and show you where to meet your tour a little later in the morning.

You will be given some free time to explore the beautiful town of Windermere, home to many fabulous cafés, restaurants and local craft shops, before you join your first tour at the meeting point at Windermere Information centre.

After this tour you will be dropped off at your chosen accommodation to enjoy an evening of free time where you will have chance to rest your head and explore the surrounding area.

The following day you will join the High Adventure tour, which takes you over the steepest pass in England into the western Lakes.

Here you will be greeted by exceptionally beautiful, rugged landscapes with views towards the coast of Cumbria.

You will visit the deepest lake in England, Wastwater and ride on the La'al Ratty, a narrow guage heritage railway in the Eskdale Valley where you will gently trundle though the wooded valley floor.

The final highlight of the High Adventure is Muncaster Castle, where you can explore the stunning gardens and visit the tearoom for a slice of delicious cake. You may also choose to watch the spectacular bird of prey show.

In the morning you will be picked up from your accommodation by your driver guide for the day to join Mountain Goat's Ten Lakes Spectacular tour.

This tour is a full day excursion where, as the name suggests, you will visit 10 lakes in the national park stopping along the way to marvel at stunning views from Lake District beauty spots while you are treated to a running commentary of historical legend and facts from your driver guide.

At the end of this popular tour you will be returned to Oxenholme Railway Station to take a return train service back to Edinburgh.

Bring everything you could possibly need for an overnight stay in the Lake District, we recommend some sturdy shoes or boots and a light rain jacket.

Children under 5 are not permitted on board our tours.

Your luggage will be safely stowed on board your transfer vehicle and left with you at your chosen accommodation. On the train you will be responsible for your own luggage.
