North York Moors & Whitby Tour

Explore the famous area of the North York Moors National Park. Famed for the largest area of heather Moorland in England, there is much more than meets the eye.

The Moors are one of the most important historical areas in Britain in terms of religion, farming, mining, fishing and smuggling. It has more ancient scheduled monuments than anywhere in the country including, standing stones, stone crosses and burial mounds.

Explore historic towns, quaint villages and historic sites such as Whitby Abbey. Enjoy unrivalled views along the Yorkshire coast and for miles across the Yorkshire.

Lake District Tour

Leaving York every Friday, the tour head to the Lake District via the Yorkshire Dales. The Yorkshire Dales is one of Britain’s most iconic National Parks, a stunning landscape of dramatic hills and valleys lined with drystone walls. You will enjoy views of castles, waterfalls and the famous ribbleshead Viaduct. You can enjoy a refreshment stop in Hawes with time to briefly explore the town or sample the famous Wensleydale Cheese. The next stop is then the Lake District.

You will start the Lake District tour by making your way from Bowness Bay towards Waterhead, cruising on England’s largest Lake, Windermere. Sit back and enjoy the unrivalled views from the Lake towards the fell ranges beyond. 

After arriving at Waterhead you make your way to Beatrix Potter’s Hill Top Farm, where she wrote many of her famous children’s stories in this 17th century cottage. You will have the opportunity to explore the gardens and visit the shop.

Continuing onto the medieval village of Hawkshead, you will have a little time to explore its many delightful features. There is plenty of photo opportunities as William Wordsworth old Grammar School is located here. 

Onwards then, to the renowned beauty spot of Tarn Hows, which is one of the most photographed locations in the Lake District. Soak up the stunning views looking towards the mountains at Tarn Hows, before making your way back to Windermere.

As your Lake District tour comes to an end, we will then continue our journey back to York.

Arrive in York and be transfered to your chose accommodation in comfort and style, where you can get to grips with your surrounding and explore the local area.

Your full day tour will begin from your accommodation where you will join our North York Moors & Whitby Tour, the most popular Mountain Goat York tour.

Leaving York we make our way to the charming town of Pickering, known as the ‘Gateway to the Moors’ and the southern terminus of the North York Moors Railway. There will be a chance to explore the station and see this picturesque market town. You can enjoy a hot brew and home made pastries, discover the historic Church and its medieval wall painting and explore the beautiful town.

We then head off the ‘Beaten Track’ into the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, there will be plenty of chances throughout your day to capture memorable photos.

After travelling over our first taste of the moorland we arrive in Goathland, a classic moorland village famed as the setting for the sixties themed police drama Heartbeat. You will also have opportunity to see Goathland Station, which was turned into ‘Hogsmeade’ for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The shop on the platform was transformed into the “Prefect’s Room” and the Ladies toilets became the “Wizard’s Room”.

We arrive in Whitby for lunch, a traditional seaside town, where there is a wide choice of places to eat – with fish and chips being the local favourite. There are a number of things to see and do such as visiting the dramatic ruins of Whitby Abbey, which was the inspiration for the novel ‘ Dracula’ or even taking a stroll along the harbour with its quaint shops.

We drive through more classic moorland landscape as we make our way through Egton and Egton Bridge, and then down the famous 33% Gradient on Limber Hill. Our journey takes us onto Glaisdale, this peaceful village is home to Beggers Bridge, a 17th century bridge with a romantic story behind it.

We get onto the heart of the Moors in the afternoon. On leaving Glaisdale we head to the high Moors, to enjoy uninterrupted panoramic views for miles, stopping at the famous landmark of Ralph’s Cross.

As we make our way out of the National Park we stop at the market town of Helmsley, you will have time to explore a bustling market square, the dramatic castle ruins, the charming tea rooms or the inviting inns. If you were asked to imagine the perfect English market town, then it'd probably look a lot like Helmsley.

Leaving Helmsley we start making our way back towards York whilst enjoying the views over the Vale of York. Sit back and enjoy more scenic Yorkshire countryside as your memorable tour draws to a close.

On day 2, you'll be picked up from your accommodation and taken on our Lake District Tour.

 

On departing York the tour will head out through the Yorkshire Dales. Enjoy the rolling landscape of Wensleydale with its famous castles and tumbling waterfalls. You will have a brief photo stop at Asygarth Waterfalls before the short drive to the “Capital” of the Dales, Hawes. You will enjoy a refreshment stop with time to briefly explore the typical Dales market town, enjoy a hot beverage or sample the famous Wensleydale Cheese at the Creamery

After departing Hawes you will experience more delightful scenery as we head out of the Dales on our way to the Lake District, approximately 1 hour from Hawes.

When we arrive in the Lake District, we join our friends from Mountain Goat for a tour around the Southern Lakes, the afternoon takes Lake District highlights including a Lake Cruise on Windermere, the village of Hawkshead, Tarn Hows beauty spot and the former home of Beatrix Potter, Hill Top Farm & Gardens.

On conclusion of the tour there will be one hours free time in the lakeside village of Bowness-on-Windermere, before heading back to York.

Bring everything you could possibly need for a 3-night stay in the York, we recommend some sturdy shoes or boots and a light rain jacket. 

Children under 5 are not permitted on board our tours.
