This full day tour explores some of the remote valleys on the eastern side of Lake District. From Windermere we cross over the Kirkstone Pass, the highest pass in the Lakes, and make our way to Ullswater for a 40 minute cruise to Howtown.
Back on the bus we make a short climb with spectacular views into Martindale where we visit the 800 year old St Martin’s Church with its even older yew tree. We also visit the much younger church of St Peter’s that is famous for its stained glass windows. From here we drive along the shore of Ullswater to Pooley Bridge where there will be time for lunch in the village.
In the afternoon we visit Lowther Castle, former home to the Earls of Lonsdale, and look at the ongoing restoration work. Following the tranquil Lowther valley we head south into Mardale where we view Haweswater, the dam and the mountains beyond.
With the last stop of the day there’s time for a short walk to the 12th century Shap Abbey, before making our way back to Windermere over the famous Shap summit.
