Embark on a full-day adventure exploring the Western Lake District’s hidden gems and breathtaking landscapes. Discover the stunning scenery and rich heritage of Cumbria on our new Mountain Passes and Muncaster Castle Tour.
Your journey begins with a scenic drive through the Langdale Valley, stopping at Blea Tarn, a tranquil lake nestled within a spectacular landscape. From here, travel onward to Wrynose Pass, where the steep, winding road offers breathtaking views over the valley. As you navigate one of Britain’s steepest mountain roads, your driver-guide will share fascinating insights before reaching the historic Three Shires Stone, marking the former counties of Cumberland, Lancashire, and Westmorland.
Next, brace yourself for the legendary Hardknott Pass, another of Britain’s most challenging roads. Along the way, you’ll pass Hardknott Roman Fort, perched 1,000 feet up on the fells. Once a crucial link between the Roman outposts of Ravenglass and Ambleside, this fort offers a glimpse into Cumbria’s ancient past.
After descending into the Eskdale Valley, you’ll arrive at the mediaeval Muncaster Castle, where a delicious lunch awaits in the newly restored Victorian Dairy. Using locally sourced produce, you’ll be able to enjoy your lunch overlooking the castle and its picturesque surroundings. The dairy has retained its original character while offering a welcoming atmosphere. Following lunch, you’ll have the freedom to explore the castle at your own pace, uncovering its fascinating history—from the legend of the Luck of Muncaster, linked to King Henry VI during the Wars of the Roses, to the mystery of Tom Fool, the castle’s notorious 16th-century jester. Wander through the magnificent gardens, which underwent significant transformation in the 18th century when the need for defensive fortifications faded. As John Ruskin once described, the gardens as ‘the gateway to paradise.’
Before departing, enjoy the spectacular Bird of Prey show, the castle is also home to the Hawk and Owl Centre, where conservation and environmental education takes center stage. This thrilling display is truly a highlight of your visit.
The afternoon takes you to the breathtaking Wast Water in Wasdale Valley, famously crowned ‘Britain’s Favourite View.’ Framed by towering peaks, including Scafell Pike, Red Pike, and Great Gable, and home to England’s deepest lake, Wast Water is celebrated for its striking beauty and dramatic atmosphere.
