Ullswater is England’s second largest lake after Lake Windermere, which is also located in the Lake District. Ullswater is roughly 9 miles long and runs through expansive vistas of Lakeland’s highest mountains such as Helvellyn. It offers a truly magnificent experience, especially when cruising on the water as you can sit back and enjoy the breathtaking views.

Ullswater has a strong connection with William Wordsworth and his sister Dorothy, it is here where he found inspiration to write some of his famous poems, including 'Daffodils'. This comes as no surprise because the setting is very inspiring.

Ullswater steamers offer cruises on the water and they have a fleet of 5 vessels, one of which is the M.Y Lady of the Lake. The M.Y Lady of the Lake was first launched on 26th June 1877 and she is believed to be the oldest working passenger vessel in the world. Ullswater Cruises also connect to some of the most famous walking routes in the Lake District. They have a fantastic website which shows you the route the cruises take and also what there is to do at each location, click here for more information.

There’s so much on offer at Ullswater, on and off the lake. The magnificent Aira Force is a showcase for the power and beauty of nature. It has been attracting visitors for over 300 years as they come to see the rainwater from the fells thunder over the falls with a 65-foot drop.

However, Aira Force has so much more to offer than just the waterfalls, it has a variety of different trails from Ullswater to Gowbarrow summit and Aira is also an integral part of the Ullswater way (A 20 mile walking route around Ullswater). These walking routes are very special and you’re likely to see rare red squirrels, woodland glades and there are many picnic spots along the way with spectacular views of Ullswater.
