What is a World Heritage Site?

A World Heritage Site is a landmark or an area which is selected by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural organisation as having some sort of significance and is then legally protected by international treaties.

The Lake District made the list in July 2017 and now hold the World Heritage Site ties alongside sites such as the Great Barrier Reef, Yosemite National Park and Venice.

About our Lake District:

  • The Lakes is the UK's largest World Heritage Site, with 229,200 hectares of vallesys, fells and fields.
  • The national park was the 31st UNESCO World Heritage Site in the UK.
  • Cumbria's 2nd World Heritage Site (Hadrian's Wall is the first).
  • The eighth World Heritage Site in the UK to be looked after by the National Trust.
  • The only World Heritage Site in the UK to be entirely a national park.
  • The 5th cultural landscape World Heritage Site in the UK.

The Three Themes:

There are three themes which must have been met in order for the Lake District to obtain World Heritage Site status. The Lake District National Park Partnership who made the bid for the status felt the Lake District reflected UNESCO's criteria. The three themes are as follows:

  • Identity – a landscape of exceptional beauty, shaped by persistent and distinctive agro-pastoral traditions and local industry which give the Lake District a special character
  • Inspiration – a landscape which has inspired artistic and literary movements and generated ideas about landscapes that have had global influence and left their physical mark
  • Conservation – it is a landscape which has been the catalyst for key developments in the national and international protection of landscapes
