Spring Gardens of The Lake District

Come and discover the most beautiful historic houses and gardens of the Lake District.

The Tour

Monday

We collect you from Oxenholme or Windermere railway station, or Windermere coach stop and transfer you to the Lindeth Howe Hotel. There, before dinner, we all meet and have a welcome drinks party.
Tuesday
A full day, starting with a short drive into the Lyth Valley, taking a quiet, wooded road past streams and fords to the Gummers Howe viewpoint over Windermere. Then on to Holker Hall, home of the Cavendish family; where we stay until after lunch. After a short stop at the monastic village of Cartmel, we continue through Grange-over-Sands for our afternoon visit to Levens Hall with it’s topiary garden. We return to the Hotel via Helsington Church viewpoint, not to be missed.
Wednesday
Today we make the spectacular crossing of the passes, Wrynose and Hardnott, via Langdale to Eskdale. We lunch there before continuing on the ‘La’al Ratty’, narrow gauge railway, then on to Wasdale to see ‘Britain’s Favourite View’. We take in the famous gardens of Muncaster Castle before making our way back to Windermere via a small nursery at Broughton.
Thursday
Today we visit Holehird Gardens, home of the Lakeland Horticultural Society, for a tour of their wonderful garden, before taking lunch in Grasmere. Our afternoon visit will start with a tour of Rydal Mount, William Wordsworth’s home, including the house and gardens; followed by a leisurely drive to Hawkshead to look at the lovely village and Beatrix Potter’s garden at Hilltop. During the day we will also go to a private garden, somewhere in Windermere!
Friday
A drive over the Eastern fells to Shap, starts our journey today, with a coffee stop at Larch Cottage Nursery in Melkinthorpe, a unique cottage nursery with many unusual features. Then on to Morland House and Garden, where we have lunch. In the afternoon we explore the Lowther Valley, including the views of the Castle and Askham village, before visiting the quiet valley of Martindale and taking a homeward bound cruise on an Ullswater Steamer.
Saturday
We transfer you from the hotel to the railway station or coach stop for your journey home.
