Leaving Windermere we drive through the heart of the Lakes, through St John`s in the Vale and on towards Penrith, Wetheral, Brampton and the Scottish Borders.. Our first stop is at beautiful Lanercost Priory in the Irthing Valley where you can see the church and Sir Burne Jones stained glass windows.
Our next stop is the 8th century Bewcastle Cross and museum at Bewcastle Church, all set within the ruins of an hexagonal Roman fort. We head on to Hadrians Wall at Banks, which is all part of a World Heritage Site. We follow the wall, with its ‘Mile Castles’ and ‘Towers’ to our lunch stop at Birdoswald Fort, where you have time to walk the wall, and view the exhibition and gallery. After lunch we continue along Hadrian’s Wall for 12 miles seeing this spectacular part of our history at Fell End to the spectacular Steel Rigg. From here we start our drive through the South Tyne Valley to Alston, England`s highest market town and on to the Hartside Pass for a tea stop and superb views across Cumbria before we make our journey back to Windermere.
