Thursday
Today we visit the Eastern Lakes. We travel through Matterdale and visit the old church. On then to Ullswater, the second largest lake, and take a cruise on the lake from Glenridding to Howtown. We then go to the remote valley of Martindale and see the old fell church in the deer forest of the Lowthers. On to Pooley Bridge for lunch. In the afternoon we journey past the castle and mausoleum of the Lowthers and then to the flooded valley of Mardale, the reservoir of Haweswater. A varied day ends with a visit to the premonstratensian abbey of Shap and a welcome tea stop on the way back to Keswick.
Friday
An early morning tour before most visitors arrive to see Surprise View, Ashness Bridge and Watendlath. On then up beautiful Borrowdale and over Honister Pass to Buttermere where we have a coffee stop. We travel on alongside Crummock Water and Loweswater to Cockermouth. This is the birthplace of William Wordsworth and we include entrance to Wordsworth House - the town is also our lunch stop. Our route back later in the afternoon takes us through the Vale of Lorton and over Whinlatter Pass where we will stop before our return to Keswick.
Saturday
A full day up to Hadrians Wall. We stop briefly in the town of Brampton and then at Lanercost to see the Church and Priory. Then up to the wall at Banks Turret and along past Birdoswald Fort and other places of interest. We go “off the wall” to the civil settlement of Vindolanda where we also have a lunch stop. Our return to Keswick is by the Upper Tyne valley to the once highest market town in England, Alston, our tea stop. Then back over Hartside Pass (nearly 2,000 ft.), past Penrith and home.
Sunday
Morning is free and we will give you a voucher for a round the lake trip on the Derwent Launch. In the afternoon your Guide will take you on the quiet by-ways to Caldbeck and the Back o’ Skiddaw.
Monday
No Lake District tour is complete without our famous “High Adventure”. Down to Grasmere and over Red Bank to the Langdales. We then follow the scenic mountain passes of Blea Tarn, Wrynose and Hardknott. The coach is then ready for a lunch break at the Bower House in Eskdale after you have had a short ride on the narrow gauge railway - L’aal Ratty. We then go to the famous view at Wastwater and on to Muncaster castle for a tea stop. We return over the fells with fine views of West Cumbria.
Tuesday
We head south to the “Heart of Lakeland” today. First we see the Castlerigg Stone Circle and then head down St. John’s in the Vale to Thirlmere by the quieter west side. Then we have a coffee stop in the village of Grasmere - time to buy the gingerbread! From Grasmere we go to the popular beauty spot of Tarn Hows and then down to the historic village of Hawkshead to explore and have lunch. After lunch, over Hawkshead Hill to the village of Coniston and then a ride on the steam driven launch Gondola and a cup of tea at the Jumping Jenny Café below Ruskin’s Brantwood. Then, time for a scenic drive back through the Lakes.
