Hotel Information
The Edwardene Hotel. Situated
5 minutes from the centre of town. Under new ownership
and being run to a very high standard. Good rooms
and excellent food. Highly recommended for a stay.
Additional Comments:
Some single rooms available without a supplement
charge. Twin or double rooms for single occupancy
is £20.00 per night.
Wednesday
On arrival we transfer you from the Railway Station
in Penrith, or from the Coach Stop in Keswick if
you
have arrived by National Express, to the Edwardene
Hotel in the centre of Keswick.
Thursday - The Western Lakes
Our morning route takes us through the wonderful
valley of Borrowdale. We stop at Ashness Bridge
and
Surprise View and drive alongside Derwentwater
before going across the rugged Honister Pass
to Buttermere. Then we pass by Crummock Water
and Loweswater with a glimpse of Ennerdale
on our way, to the historic port of Whitehaven.
We will see
the regenerated port and view it’s history
at “The
Rum Story”, an interesting window into the
port’s
past. The return journey will visit St. Bees and
return
to Keswick by the Whinlatter Pass.
Friday - Carlisle and the Solway
Our first stop is at Carlisle to visit the Castle
and
then to the Museum at Tullie House where we
can learn about Border Reivers and Pele Towers
and Carlisle. After lunch we go to the historic
Solway and
see the site of the end of the Roman Wall,
fortified churches, and the different scenery
of this little visited area before returning
to Keswick by way of
Silloth.
Saturday - John Peel Country
The morning is free with a voucher provided
for a
cruise on Derwentwater. In the afternoon we
have a
tour of John Peel Country, full of local history,
visit
Caldbeck, and return by the Stone Circle at
Castlerigg.
Sunday - High Adventure
We travel by Thirlmere and start our “Goat
Country
Tour” by ascending Red Bank into the Langdale
valley and going over the Blea Tarn road to Little
Langdale. We have a coffee break on Wrynose Pass
before climbing the serpentine curves of Hardknott.
We can enjoy the aerial views of Dunnerdale and
later see the Roman Fort poised above Eskdale
which we descend to for lunch.
In the afternoon we travel on the Ravenglass railway
before driving to Muncaster Castle where we see
the gardens
and the Owl
Sanctuary. While there we can see a display of
bird
flying. Our return is over Corney Fell and by
Coniston Water before our return over Dunmail
Raise to Keswick.
Monday - Castles and Towns of North Cumbria
We travel to the Vale of Eden via Penrith
with a visit
to Brougham castle, the first of many reminders
of
Lady Anne Clifford. We visit the charming town
of
Appleby before heading towards the Pennines
and Brough Castle, and a lunch stop at Kirkby
Stephen. The rugged valley of Mallerstang is
followed past Pendragon castle and we see the
famous Ribblehead Viaduct. The beautiful scenery
of the Howgills is seen as we go through Sedbergh
on our way back to Keswick.
Tuesday - Border Castles , Churches and the
Roman Wall
An unusual opportunity to visit the turbulent
Borders and it’s wild scenery. The morning
will see
us in Brampton and a visit to Lanercost Priory
and
then on to the fort of Birdoswald on the Roman
Wall. We then travel through the Debatable Lands
to lonely Bewcastle and Newcastleton. In the
afternoon we visit the only true Reivers castle
at The
Hermitage before travelling back home by
Langholm.
Wednesday
Sadly, time to go home. Return transfers
are provided to Penrith Railway Station and
the Bus Station.
